FLORENCE, S.C. – The Converse University men's basketball team dropped an 82-77 decision to Francis Marion on Saturday afternoon inside the Smith University Center.
With the loss, Converse drops to 1-3 overall and 0-1 in Conference Carolinas action. The Valkyries loss also snaps a three match winning streak against the Patriots. Francis Marion improves to 3-3 overall and 1-0 in Conference Carolinas play.
Isac Ahnstrand scored a career high 18-points on Saturday afternoon and finished second on the team with four rebounds.
Kyle Monk finished second on the team with 12 points and
Jay Mitchell finished third on the team with 10 points.
Leo Da Campo led the team with 10 rebounds and Edo Buffo led the team with four assists on the night.
First Half Notes:
- Francis Marion opened the game on a 5-0 run, before Caleb Reams hit a three-pointer to score the first points of the game for Converse at the 18:16 mark.
- The Converse offense went quiet over the next three minutes of action, allowing Francis Marion to build a 16-3 lead.
- Myson Lowe ended the Valkyries scoring drought with a midrange jumper at the 14:46 mark of the period. Lowe's jumper sparked a 7-0 run for the Valkyries, pulling Converse within striking distance of Francis Marion at 16-12.
- With 7:34 to go in the opening half, the Patriots had built their lead back up to double-digits following a fastbreak layup.
- Before the end of the half, the Valkyries were able to within single digits of the Patriots at 40-33.
- Converse shot 33 percent from the field, 29 percent from three-point range, and 72 percent from the free throw line.
Second Half Notes:
- Coming out of the halftime break, Francis Marion opened the period on a 15-2 run.
- Edo Buffo scored the first field goal of the half with a layup at the 14:16 mark of the period. The basket jump started the Valkyries offense as they went on a 13-0 run.
- The Valkyries continued to chip away at the Patriots lead, with 7:00 to play in the game, Jay Mitchell knocked down a three-pointer to put the Valkyries in striking distance down 64-58.
- Converse continued to push and nearly broke through at the 2:12 mark of the half. Kervens Yacinthe hit a three-pointer and the Valkyries trailed 71-68.
- Made free throws by Francis Marion and dwindling clock hurt Converse down the stretch. The Valkyries ran out of time as Francis Marion won 82-77.
- Converse shot 40 percent from the field, 33 percent from three-point range, and 80 percent from the free throw line.
