PEMBROKE, N.C. – The Converse University men's basketball team scored their least amount of points on Saturday afternoon, as they fell 90-60 to UNC Pembroke.
With the loss Converse drops their third straight game and falls to 9-4 overall and 3-2 in Conference Carolinas action. Meanwhile, UNC Pembroke wins their eighth straight game and improves to 10-3 overall and 4-0 in Conference Carolinas play.
Uzziah Dawkins led the team with 15-points and C.J. Jamison finished second on the team with 11-points.
First Half Notes:
- UNC Pembroke won the opening tip-off and scored on their first possession of the game. Following a Valkyries turnover at the other end of the floor, the Braves were up 4-0.
- Dawkins scored the first points of the game for Converse, with a three-pointer at the 17:26 mark of the half.
- UNC Pembroke then went on an 8-0 run to take a commanding 12-3 advantage over the Valkyries in the opening moments of the first half.
- Earl Burgess III hit a three-pointer to stop the Braves run and cut the deficit in half for the Valkyries offense.
- Dawkins helped keep the Valkyries within striking distance following a personal 8-0 run over a 70 second time span.
- At the 10:25 mark of the period, Jay Mitchell found Joel Pullen for a layup that cut the deficit to 17-16.
- Following a lull in the scoring, Mitchell tied the game with a three-pointer with 7:39 to play in the half. Seconds later, Mitchell scored on a fast break layup and Converse held their first lead of the game at 21-19.
- Over the next several minutes of action, the Valkyries used a 6-3 run to take a 27-22 lead going into the under four media timeout.
- UNC Pembroke tied the game at 27 with 2:47 to play in the half. The Braves took a 32-31 lead into the halftime break.
- Converse shot 45 percent from the field, 55 percent from three point range and 100 percent from the free throw line.
Second Half Notes:
- Coming out of the halftime break, UNC Pembroke hit back-to-back three pointers to give the Braves a 38-31 advantage.
- Following a Converse timeout, Jamison hit a three-pointer with 18:43 to play in the game. The Valkyries then went on an eight minute stretch of scoreless basketball, before Malcolm Morgan recorded a layup to end the shooting draught.
- Over that same time frame, UNC Pembroke went on a 19-0 run to take a 21-point lead over Converse.
- Despite the Valkyries best efforts, they were unable get the Braves lead down to single-digits.
- Converse was outscored 58-29 in the second half, shooting 33 percent from the field, 27 percent from three-point range and 66 percent from the free throw line.
