Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Five Valkyries Score in Double-Digits as Converse Downs Lees-McRae

BANNER ELK, N.C.  – For the third consecutive game, the Converse University women's basketball team (8-10, 4-5 Conference Carolinas) won their matchup by at least ten points. The Valkyries downed fellow northwest division institution Lees-McRae (1-13, 0-9 Conference Carolinas) by a final score of 66-52 on Wednesday night.

Five Valkyries scored double-digit points, the first time the team has done so this season. Junior guard Zariyah Washington led the team with 13 points. Graduate guard Jordan Brown, redshirt senior center Sydney Wilson and senior guard Alisa Davenport all posted 11 points. Junior guard Elisa Solé Sanchez rounded out the Valkyries starting five and posted ten points. Senior guard Jennifer Damoah came off the bench and led the team in rebounds with seven.

The Valkyries shot exactly 50% from both the field and beyond the arc. The purple and gold posted a 57.9% free-throw percentage and out-rebounded the Bobcats by four, 39-35.

Converse started the game off impressively both offensively and defensively. The Valkyries sank eight field goals, including a pair of three pointers, while only giving up four points in the first ten minutes. It is the third time this season the Valkyries have held their opponents to single-digit scoring in the first quarter and the lowest total of the trio of games.

The Bobcats sank their only basket of the opening quarter just 40 seconds after tipoff and did not score another basket until the second quarter. After taking the lead with just under eight minutes to play in the first quarter, Converse never looked back.

The Valkyries increased the lead in the second quarter by five points and took a 38-19 lead into halftime, exactly doubling the offensive performance of the Bobcats in the first two quarters. With the lead in double-digits, the six-point advantage the Bobcats posted in the third quarter was not enough to stop Converse from taking the victory by a final score of 66-52.

Converse returns home to the friendly confines of the Weisiger Center on Saturday, Jan. 27 as they host Conference Carolinas newcomer Young Harris at 2 P.M.
