MOUNT OLIVE, N.C. – With under four minutes to play in the game, the Converse University men's basketball team made one final push against the Trojans defense, but time ran out before the comeback could be complete as the Valkyries fell 77-71 on Saturday afternoon inside Kornegay Arena.
With the loss the Valkyries are now 11-6 overall and 4-4 in Conference Carolinas games this season. Converse is now 4-4 in road matches this season and 0-3 in road games during the month of January. Mount Olive improves to 4-13 overall and 3-4 in Conference Carolinas action. The Trojans have now won two straight against the Valkyries and they are 3-0 in games played in Mount Olive.
Kervens Yacinthe led the team with 15-points off the bench,
CJ Jamison finished second on the team with 14-points,
Uzziah Dawkins contributed 13-points and
Earl Burgess III added 10-points in the loss.
First Half Notes:
- Mount Olive won the opening tip-off but missed their first shot of the game. Burgess III recorded the first steal of the game but missed the first shot of the day for the Valkyries offense.
- Brent Randleman scored the first points of the game for either side with 18:44 to play in the half. On the Valkyries next possession down the court, Joel Pullen found Dawkins for the games first three-pointer and Converse led 3-2.
- For the majority of the first half, neither side was able to get much offense going. With just 8:50 to play in the half, Yacinthe knocked down a three-pointer and the Valkyries trailed 19-10.
- A Shane Peterson layup with 5:49 to play in the half, gave Mount Olive their largest lead of the period with a 25-12 advantage over the Valkyries.
- Converse was able to cut into the Trojans lead late in the half, a Pullen three-pointer with 17 seconds to play concluded the scoring for the opening period of action.
- Trailing 34-28 at the halftime break, the Valkyries shot 40 percent from the field, 28 percent from three-point range and 100 percent from the free throw line.
Second Half Notes:
- Coming out of halftime, the Valkyries had the ball and Dawkins scored the opening layup of the period. Following a made free attempt by Dawkins, the Valkyries trailed 34-31 in the opening moments of the half.
- Converse continued to hang around and with 15:14 to play a Jay Mitchell jumper pulled Converse back within a pair at 38-36.
- Despite the Valkyries best efforts, the Trojans always seemed to have an answer offensively. At the 10:17 mark of the half, Mount Olive once again held an eight point lead at 54-46.
- Over the next four minutes of game time, Mount Olive extended their lead using a 12-4 run.
- The Converse offense came back to life in the final moments of the game as they closed out the half on an 18-11 run.
- Both teams scored 43 points in the second half, as the Valkyries shot 47 percent from the field, 28 percent from beyond the arch and 70 percent from the free throw line.
