SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Behind a season-high 27 points from redshirt senior center
Sydney Wilson, just one point off her career-high, the Converse University women's basketball team (6-10, 2-5 Conference Carolinas) defeated the Johnson & Wales Wildcats (13-3) by a final score of 67-51. The Valkyries snapped a seven-game win streak for the Wildcats.
Wilson led the team in scoring with her 27 points, the most for a Valkyrie this season. She completed her double-double with a team-leading 13 rebounds. Elisa Solé Sanchez was the team's second-leading scorer. She posted 13 points, nine of which came from her three-point shots.
The Valkyries' defense held Wildcats' leading scorer Jordan Durant, no relation to Phoenix Suns' power forward and 10th all-time leading scorer in NBA history Kevin Durant, to just seven points.
Converse shot 43.8% from the floor and 22.7% from beyond the arc. It is their highest shooting percentage since the New-Years-Eve victory over St. Augustine's.
The Valkyries and Wildcats traded baskets and the first quarter and Johnson & Wales held an early 13-12 advantage through the game's first 10 minutes. Converse took the lead after exactly one minute of play in the second quarter and did not give it up for the duration of the game. Aided by a 10-point advantage in the second frame of the game, Converse 34-25 lead into the break.
After outscoring the Wildcats in each of the final two quarters, Converse secured the double-digit, 67-51, victory.
Converse returns to the court on Saturday, Jan. 20 as they head to Mount Olive, North Carolina, home of the Mount Olive Pickle Company, to take on the University of Mount Olive Trojans at 2 P.M.
