SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Converse University field hockey team fell 3-2 in overtime to Frostburg State on Saturday afternoon at Weisiger Stadium.
This is the first opening day loss for the Valkyries since the Spring 2021 season. The loss to Frostburg State also gives the Bobcats a 2-1 advantage in the overall series and a 2-0 record in Spartanburg against Converse.
The Valkyries came out ready to put on a show for the hometown crowd, as they attempted multiple penalty corners in the first three minutes of the contest. Sure enough the Valkyries broke through first with a goal just six minutes into the game. Freshman

The Valkyries defense began to clamp down on the defensive end of the field as they thwarted multiple shot attempts from the Bobcats offense. At the end of the first quarter the Valkyries held onto a 1-0 advantage over Frostburg State. However, the lead did not last long as Paige Leitzel found Emilie Bonhivert for the equalizer just three minutes into the second quarter. The half ended with a 1-1 tie between the two squads.
Coming out of the halftime intermission, Converse once again struck first with a goal in the 35
th minute of action.
Catalina Pistaccio found Buyst for her second goal of the afternoon and the Valkyries were back on top 2-1. Converse held onto the lead throughout the third quarter. The Bobcats continued to be persistent and found the back of the net midway through the fourth quarter. Ava Waddell found Emilie Bonhivert for the equalizer.
Neither team was able to find the back of the net by the end of regulation, sending the two teams to a sudden death overtime period. In overtime the two teams went back-and-forth in their attacking efforts and with two minutes left on the clock, Gracie Daniels found Paige Leitzel for the game winning goal.
Frostburg State outshot Converse 23-12 overall and 5-4 in shots on goal. Each team made a pair of saves, while Frostburg Stage finished with two more corners than Converse.
