Valkyries Fly Past Flying Fleet

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Converse lacrosse team scored early and often on Tuesday night at Weisiger Stadium as they came away with a 21-7 win over Erskine College.

With the win Converse improves to 6-5 overall and 2-1 in Conference Carolinas action, while Erskine falls to 2-4 overall and 0-3 in conference play this season. The Valkyries 16 team assist tie the school record for assists in a game. The last time the Valkyries achieved this feat was exactly 13 years ago to the day against Tiffin University. The Valkyries 37 combined points is tied for the second most in school history, matching their total from last years University of Dallas game.

Following a yellow card by the Valkyries defense in the early moments of the second quarter, Erskine took advantage and scored the opening goal of the game. Converse then went on a 10-0 run to close out the opening period, freshman Gencie Coan and Ryleigh Schaeffer each recorded hat tricks in the opening period.

In the second quarter Brenna Everette scored the first goal of the period from a pass by Rhianna Warner. The 11-1 advantage gave the Valkyries a running clock but it was short lived as Erskine scored the next two goals to make it an 11-3 game. Thankfully, Schaeffer, Cassidy O'Neill and Hailey Obenchain all scored goals to close out the period to keep the running clock in effect going into the halftime break.

In the third quarter, the Valkyries outscored Erskine 5-1 and in the fourth quarter the Flying Fleet got the better of the Valkyries and outscored them 3-2. Four different players recorded seven-point outings for Converse, with Schaeffer leading the way with a team high six goals. Brenna Everette matched her career high in assists with a five-assist outing against the Flying Fleet. Everette also added a pair of goals which gives her an even 30 goals on the season, while Obenchain crossed the 30 assist threshold for the season.

Coan finished second on the team with five goals in the game and Obenchain scored four goals to finish third on the team in scoring. Reagan Collins picked up the win for the Valkyries and recorded a 10 save outing against the Flying Fleet.
