Obenchain Breaks Single Season Assists Record as Valkyries Dominate Shorter

ROME, Ga. – It was a record-breaking day for the Converse University lacrosse team as freshman attackman Hailey Obenchain broke the single season school record for assists against the Shorter Hawks in a 19-8 Converse win on Saturday afternoon.

The win on Saturday was a program first for the Valkyries as they were previously 0-2 against the Hawks dating back to the 2013 season. With the win the Valkyries improve to 5-4 overall and 2-2 in away games this season, meanwhile Shorter falls to 2-8 overall.

Obenchain's six assist day was just one away from tying the individual game record in program history. However, the freshman's six assist performance gives her a program record 25 assists in a single season. Obenchain passed Lacey Bevilacqua who had 24 assists during the 2010 lacrosse season.

Jadie Arnold opened the scoring with an unassisted goal for Shorter just 40 seconds into the game. Karter Lauer scored the equalizer for Converse with 10:18 to go in the opening period, moments later Cassidy O'Neill scored the go-ahead goal for the Valkyries. With 4:43 to play in the period, Ryleigh Schaeffer scored to give the Valkyries a 3-1 advantage. In the final moments of the first quarter,
Jazzelle Ware scored off an Olivia Contento pass to make it a 3-2 contest heading into the second stanza of action.

In the second quarter the Valkyries scored early and often as they outscored the Hawks 6-1 in the period. Converse took a 9-3 lead into the halftime break against Shorter. The third quarter was a high scoring frame as the Valkyries outscored the Hawks 7-4 in the period. In the final period of action, the Valkyries outscored Shorter 3-1 to complete the 19-8 win for Converse.

Brenna Everette led the Valkyries offense with a four-goal performance against the Hawks. O'Neill, Karter Lauer and Obenchain all recorded hat tricks in the win and Rhianna Warner, Gencie Coan and Schaeffer each contributed a pair of goals on Saturday afternoon. Obenchain led the team with 6 assists and 9 points in the contest, while starting goalie Reagan Collins had 8 saves in the win for Converse.
