SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Converse University men's basketball team fell 71-57 to No. 5 UNC Pembroke on Saturday afternoon inside the Weisiger Center.
Converse is now 12-12 overall and 10-6 in Conference Carolinas action this season. With the Valkyries loss on Saturday, the team's double-digit home winning streak came to a close as they suffered their first home loss since November. UNC Pembroke improved to 23-1 overall on the season and 15-1 in Conference Carolinas action. The Braves have now won 16-straight games since an early season loss to Francis Marion.
Uzziah Dawkins once again led the Valkyries in scoring with a 19-point outing against the Braves.
Jordan Warlick finished second on the team with 11-points, while both
Bosko Bojovic and
Trey Smith both contributed 9-points.
1st Half Notes:
- UNC Pembroke won the opening tip-off and immediately scored off a Bradlee Haskell jumper. The Braves opened the game on a 7-0 run and forced Converse to use an early timeout.
- Dawkins scored the first points of the game for Converse at the 15:13 mark of the opening half.
- Converse stayed within single-digits of UNC Pembroke until the 11:26 mark when Javonte Waverly scored on a fast break opportunity to push the Braves lead to 18-7. A fast break dunk by Elijah Cobb with 6:34 left in the period caped off a 9-2 run by the Braves offense.
- Bojovic ended the run with a layup at the 6:13 juncture in the opening half. UNC Pembroke went into the halftime break up 39-25.
- Converse shot 40 percent from the field in the opening half, 12.5 percent from the three-point line and 100 percent from the free throw line.
2nd Half Notes:
- Elijah Cobb scored the opening basket for UNC Pembroke but Bojovic quickly countered with a layup at the other end. On the Valkyries next possession down the court, Warlick hit a three-pointer and the Valkyries were back within 11-points at 41-30.
- With 15:02 to play in the game Warlick hit his second three-pointer of the half and for the first time since the first period the Valkyries were back within 8-points of UNC Pembroke.
- Despite being so close the Valkyries were unable to build off the momentum and UNC Pembroke quickly built there lead back up to double-digits.
- Following a 10-run by the Braves at the 11:32 mark of the period, the Valkyries once again faced an up hill climb down 55-37.
- With 1:21 remaining in the game Trey Smith hit the free throw to complete the four-point play following a foul on his three-point basket. The points had the Valkyries back within striking distance at 67-57. The Valkyries missed their final two shots of the game and UNC Pembroke escaped the Weisiger Center with the win.
- Converse and UNC Pembroke both scored 32-points in the second half, Converse shot 32 percent from the field, 20 percent from three-point range and 88 percent from the free throw line in the second half.

The Valkyries will hit the road this week as they travel to Lees-McRae for a midweek matchup against the Bobcats. Tip-off is set for 7:00 p.m. in Banner Elk, N.C.
