Valkyries Hold Off Montreat For First Win

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Converse University lacrosse escaped Weisiger Stadium with their first win of the 2023 campaign following a 17-15 victory over Montreat College on Wednesday night.
 
With the win the Valkyries improve to 1-2 overall on the season and Montreat drops to 0-1. The Valkyries scored a season high 17 goals against the Cavaliers and senior Brenna Everette matched her career high in goals with five on the night. Freshman Ryleigh Scaeffer finished second on the team with a career best four goals, while Gencie Coan and Karter Lauer both recorded their first career hat tricks for the Valkyries. Hailey Obenchain tied her season high in assists with four against the Cavaliers.
 
Montreat scored first in the opening quarter, when Kate Gauntlett scored with unassisted with 12:25 remaining in the period. A few moments later Obenchain found Everette for the Valkyries first goal of the game. With 8:04 remaining in the quarter Lauer scored her first goal of the game and moments later fellow freshman Gencie Coan found the back of the net for her first career goal. Leading 3-1, Montreat's Gauntlett answered once again as she scored her second goal of the night with 7:30 to play in the first quarter. Schaeffer ended the scoring in the first period with a goal at the 7:15 mark of the period.
 
In the second quarter the Valkyries raced out to a 7-2 advantage following goals by Lauer, Everette and Obenchain. Gauntlett recorded her hat trick at the 9:06 mark of the second quarter, which triggered three straight goals by the Cavaliers. Lauer and Everette scored the final two goals of the period to give Converse a 9-5 advantage going into the halftime break.
 
The third quarter was a tightly contested high scoring quarter between the two teams as a total of 12 goals were scored in the period. Each team tallied six goals in the period as Converse clung to a 15-11 lead going into the final quarter of action. Montreat scored the first three goals of the fourth quarter and pulled within a goal at 15-14. With the lead slowly slipping away for the Valkyries, Rhianna Warner scored to give the Valkyries a two-goal advantage once again. Gauntlett scored again at the 4:16 mark as the Valkyries once again looked to hold off a late surge by the Cavaliers. Schaeffer scored the final goal of the game with 4:03 to play and the Valkyries secured their first win of the season.
