SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Converse University men's tennis team defeated Mars Hill 4-3 on Saturday afternoon at the Converse University Tennis Courts.
With the win on Saturday the Valkyries improve to 2-2 overall and complete the season sweep of Mars Hill for the first time in school history. Meanwhile, Mars Hill has now lost five straight matches as they drop to 2-5 overall on the season.
The Valkyries got off to a hot start as they won the crucial doubles point against the Lions. After falling at the No. 3 doubles court, the Valkyries top duo of
Merlin Bellet and
Enzo Marcheschi forced the winner take all match at No. 2 doubles following a 7-5 win at the No. 1 doubles flight. In the crucial No. 2 doubles match, the Valkyries tandem of
Gregoire Legrand and
Paul Berrouet defeated their Mars Hill opponent to give Converse a 1-0 advantage.
In singles action the Valkyries continued their momentum from the doubles court as both Bellet and Marcheschi picked up straight set wins at the No. 1 and No. 3 singles flights. Leading 3-0 the Valkyries ran into a bit of trouble as they lost at the No. 4 and No. 5 singles courts. Needing just one win to clinch, Morel won in straight sets at No. 6 singles to secure the victory. Legrand battled on the final court of the evening against Eliot Deknuydt. Legrand dropped the opening but fought back and won a second set tie breaker 7-6 (7-5). Although the match had already been decided the two played the final pro set, which Legrand came up short at 10-7.
The Converse men's tennis team will have a quick turnaround as they travel to Limestone tomorrow afternoon.
