Box Score CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Converse women's basketball team picked up a 60-53 road win over Johnson and Wales on Friday night. The win moves Converse to 5-22 overall while Johnson & Wales falls to 15-9 overall.
The game got off to a slow start as a point would not be put on the board until the 8:02 mark.
Sydney Wilson drained a jump shot for the Valkyries to give them an early 2-0 lead. The Wildcats answered at the 6:19 mark with a pair of free throws falling their way. Another pair of free throws allowed Johnson & Wales to capture a 5-4 lead before Converse ran away with it, 14-10, in the first quarter.
A three-pointer made by Johnson & Wales' Victoria Boddie brought the Wildcats within one point of the Valkyries lead to open up the second quarter of play. With Converse having a nine-point lead with 3:40 left on the clock, Johnson and & Wales called a timeout followed by them making up ground with five straight points.
Zahra Cross then got the Valkyries back up to a six-point lead before Destiny Benson got the Wildcats within four points of Converse's advantage going into halftime.
Coming out of the locker room with the 30-26 lead, Wilson got to work quick for the Valkyries, putting up two points just 21 seconds into the third quarter.
Alisa Davenport pushed Converse to a seven-point lead with 6:44 remaining in the quarter, but the Wildcats were able to get within three points of the lead with just under five minutes left. A pair of free throws by Wilson gave the Valkyries a cushion as they were 11 points ahead of Johnson & Wales at the 2:49 mark. A layup from the Wildcats would be a last-ditch effort to try to catch the Valkyrie lead in the third quarter as they started the final quarter down 51-42 to Converse.
The Valkyries were not able to get a point on the board in the fourth quarter until the 5:47 mark as Davenport had a pair of free throws go her way to make it a 53-48 game in Converse's favor. Jayla Lovett got Johnson & Wales within three points of the lead as she sank a three-pointer. Back-to-back layups from Wilson got Converse back in the game with a six-point lead which was followed by Johnson & Wales getting within four points with their own set of free throws. One final point from Wilson with two seconds left gave Converse the 60-53 win over Johnson & Wales.
Wilson led the team overall with a double-double, tallying 19 points, 11 rebounds and one assist. Brown followed with 15 points, three rebounds, and three steals.

Converse will travel to Emmanuel College on Tuesday evening for their final game of the 2023 season.
