Converse Dominates in Road Win over Johnson & Wales

Box Score CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Converse women's basketball team picked up a 60-53 road win over Johnson and Wales on Friday night. The win moves Converse to 5-22 overall while Johnson & Wales falls to 15-9 overall.

The game got off to a slow start as a point would not be put on the board until the 8:02 mark. Sydney Wilson drained a jump shot for the Valkyries to give them an early 2-0 lead. The Wildcats answered at the 6:19 mark with a pair of free throws falling their way. Another pair of free throws allowed Johnson & Wales to capture a 5-4 lead before Converse ran away with it, 14-10, in the first quarter.

A three-pointer made by Johnson & Wales' Victoria Boddie brought the Wildcats within one point of the Valkyries lead to open up the second quarter of play. With Converse having a nine-point lead with 3:40 left on the clock, Johnson and & Wales called a timeout followed by them making up ground with five straight points. Zahra Cross then got the Valkyries back up to a six-point lead before Destiny Benson got the Wildcats within four points of Converse's advantage going into halftime.

Coming out of the locker room with the 30-26 lead, Wilson got to work quick for the Valkyries, putting up two points just 21 seconds into the third quarter. Alisa Davenport pushed Converse to a seven-point lead with 6:44 remaining in the quarter, but the Wildcats were able to get within three points of the lead with just under five minutes left. A pair of free throws by Wilson gave the Valkyries a cushion as they were 11 points ahead of Johnson & Wales at the 2:49 mark. A layup from the Wildcats would be a last-ditch effort to try to catch the Valkyrie lead in the third quarter as they started the final quarter down 51-42 to Converse.

The Valkyries were not able to get a point on the board in the fourth quarter until the 5:47 mark as Davenport had a pair of free throws go her way to make it a 53-48 game in Converse's favor. Jayla Lovett got Johnson & Wales within three points of the lead as she sank a three-pointer. Back-to-back layups from Wilson got Converse back in the game with a six-point lead which was followed by Johnson & Wales getting within four points with their own set of free throws. One final point from Wilson with two seconds left gave Converse the 60-53 win over Johnson & Wales.

Wilson led the team overall with a double-double, tallying 19 points, 11 rebounds and one assist. Brown followed with 15 points, three rebounds, and three steals.
