SUMTER, S.C. – The Converse University men's basketball team shot an even 50 percent from the field and defeated Morris College for the second time this season by the final score of 86-48.
With the win the Valkyries improve to 6-0 on the season and continue the best start in program history. Meanwhile, Morris remains winless on the season and drops to 0-8.
Edoardo Buffo led the team with 17 points,
Malcolm Morgan finished second on the team with 15 points,
Earl Burgess III came off the bench to score 12 points,
CJ Jamison added 11 points and
Leo Da Campo contributed 10 points for the Valkyries.
First Half Notes:
- Converse won the opening tip-off and the Italian connection of Buffo and Da Campo scored the opening points of the contest.
- Mac Washington scored the first points of the game for Morris and tied the match at three. Following a second Da Campo score, Morris took their first and only lead of the match at 6-5 following a Fahat Omar three-pointer.
- Jamison knocked down the first three-pointer of the game for Converse and the Valkyries were back on top 8-6. Buffo and Morgan scored on the Valkyries next 2 possession's and Converse was back in full control up 12-6.
- With 11:39 to play in the first half Jamison hit another three-pointer and the Valkyries were up 23-8.
- Morris started to counter the Valkyries offensive attack and cut the Valkyries lead back to nine points, following a William Swinson layup.
- Despite the Hornets best attempts to keep up with the Valkyries offense, Converse went into the halftime break up 42-24.
- Converse shot 50 percent from the field in the first half, 28 percent from three-point range and 66 percent from the free throw line.
Second Half Notes:
- The Valkyries got the ball to start the second half and Buffo connected on back-to-back three-pointers. Converse held a 48-24 advantage with 19:35 to play in the game.
- Moments later following a pair of miscues by the Hornets offense, Morgan scored a fastbreak basket and the Valkyries held their largest lead of the game at 61-30.
- The Valkyries never letup down the stretch and their lead never dropped below 30 points the rest of the game.
- Converse scored 44 points in the second half, shot 51 percent from the field, 23 percent from three-point range and 55 percent from the free throw line.
