GAFFNEY, S.C. – For the first time in three seasons the Converse University field hockey team will not be ending their season with a championship as they fell 2-1 to Limestone on Tuesday night in the First round of the South Atlantic Conference Championships.
With the loss Converse concludes the 2023 field hockey season with an 8-10 record. Converse is now 0-2 when playing in the first round of the SAC Championships. Limestone improves to 11-4 overall and advances to Mount Olive for the semifinals round of the SAC Championships on Friday afternoon.
The Valkyries came out aggressive in the opening quarter on Tuesday night as
Catalina Pistaccio scored the first goal of the game just six minutes into the contest. The Valkyries kept up the pressure as they ended the period with seven shots and five penalty corners against the Saints.
Less than a minute into the second period of action, Felicitas Herrero Ma found Josefina Golppi for the equalizer. The two teams played to a stalemate and went into the halftime intermission knotted at one goal each.
Following a scoreless third quarter, the two squads appeared to be heading to their third overtime match of the 2023 season. With less than six minutes left in the final period of action, Golppi found Victoria Gonzalez for the game-winning goal.
Brooklyn Widdess led the team with 4 total shots and 2 shots on goal, while Pistaccio finished as the Valkyries lone goal scorer on the evening.
Kat Daniels made five saves in goal for Converse.
