Weekend Recap: Mount Olive and Newberry

NEWBERRY, S.C. – The Converse University volleyball team went 0-2 this weekend with losses to Mount Olive and Newberry.  
 
With the losses the Valkyries drop to 7-17 overall and 6-6 in Conference Carolinas action. Converse also falls to 2-9 in road games this season.
 
Friday: Mount Olive 3, Converse 0
  • Mount Olive recorded 15 kills and hit .333 as a team on the way to a 25-15 first set win over Converse on Friday night.
  • The Valkyries recorded 9 kills in the first set and hit a team high .333 in the opening period.
  • In the second set, Mount Olive recorded 12 kills and Converse posted 9 team kills as the Trojans took the second stanza 25-18.
  • In the final set of the night the Valkyries recorded just 6 kills and Mount Olive posted 10 kills. The Trojans completed the sweep with a 25-19 set win over the Valkyries.
  • Evelyn Fitz led the team with 7 kills, Reese Plont finished second on the team with 5 kills and AC Garbade finished third on the team with 4 kills. Mackenzie Day led the team with 14 digs.
 
Saturday: Newberry 3, Converse 0
  • Newberry recorded 11 team kills in the first set, while Converse posted 9 team kills in the opening frame. The Wolves took the first set 25-17.
  • In the second set, neither team's offense hit the ball very well as the Wolves ended the period with 8 kills and the Valkyries finished with 5 kills. Newberry took the second set 25-19.
  • In what would be the final set of the day both teams posted 14 team kills, but it was Newberry who finished on top with 25-22 set win.
  • Evelyn Fitz led the team with 8 kills, Ariel Bryant recorded 7 kills and Alayah Robertson finished third on the team with 5 kills.
  • Madison Gregory posted a double-double with a 20 assist and 11 dig performance against the Wolves. Bryant finished second on the team with 10 digs and Mackenzie Day finished third on the team with 9 kills.
 
Next Up:
Converse will be back at home this Tuesday evening as they battle Belmont Abbey. First serve is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
