SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Converse University volleyball team fell 3-0 to Mars Hill on Tuesday night inside the Weisiger Center.
With the loss the Valkyries fall to 6-14 overall, while Mars Hill improves to 9-7 overall on the season.
In the opening set the two teams matched one another point-for-point and were deadlocked at 14 through the first 28 points of the set. Mars Hill then used a 7-0 run to take a commanding lead in the set. Converse was only able to get two more points the rest of the set as they fell 25-16.
Mars Hill started the second set on a 5-0 run before
Evelyn Fitz hammered home a kill to get the Valkyries on the board. Moments later the Valkyries faced a 12-2 hole as they attempted to fight back into the set. The Mars Hill defense proved to be difficult as the Converse offense went silent for most of the set. The Lions took the second set 25-9 over the Valkyries.
In the third stanza the Lions started out on a 4-1 run before Converse countered with a short run of their own. Holding a 6-4 advantage, the Lions used a 5-0 spurt to take an 11-4 lead over the Valkyries. Moments later the Valkyries trailed 19-9 and ran out of time for a comeback as they fell 25-13.
MacKenzie Schmucker finished the match with a team high 14 assists and 13 digs in the loss.
Ariel Bryant added 12 digs and
Mackenzie Day finished with 10 digs.
Tia Gripado led the team with 5 kills, Fitz and Bryant were second on the team with 4 kills each.
Next Up:
Converse will stay at home this weekend and face King University. First serve is set for a 2:00 p.m. start inside the Weisiger Center.
