Uzziah Dawkins found
Jordan Warlick for the go-ahead three-pointer as the Converse University men's basketball team defeated Belmont Abbey 71-65 on Saturday evening inside the Weisiger Center.
Converse has now won four straight games to improve to 11-11 overall on the season and 9-5 in Conference Carolinas play this season. The Valkyries have now won 10-straight basketball games inside the Weisiger Center dating back to November. The win also keeps the Valkyries in the hunt to host a home tournament game as they stay in the sixth spot in the Conference Carolinas Standings. Meanwhile, Belmont Abbey drops to 13-8 overall and 9-4 in Conference Carolinas action.
Bosko Bojovic continued his stretch of dominance as he posted his fifth straight double-double and his 13
th straight game of scoring at least 10-points in a game. Dawkins meanwhile, had a near triple double tonight as he stuffed the stat sheet with a 13-point, 9-rebound, 7-assist and 3-steal effort.
Aaron Porcil came off the bench and rounded out the Valkyries double-figure scorers with 12-points in the win.
1st Half Notes:
- Both teams came up empty on there first three possessions of the game. Wade Jackson scored the first five points of the game for Belmont Abbey with baskets at the 18:26 mark and at the 17:39 mark of the opening half.
- Bojovic scored the first points of the game for Converse at the free throw line with 16:55 to play in the period. On the Crusaders next possession Dawkins stole the ball away from Jackson and found Jay Mitchell for the Valkyries first field goal of the night.
- It took a few possessions but Bojovic gave the Valkyries their first lead of the night at 8-7 with 14:46 to go in the half. Moments later Nygel Boozer hit a three-pointer off an assist from Trey Smith and the Valkyries held an 11-7 advantage.
- The Valkyries lead was short lived as Belmont Abbey used an 8-2 run to take back the lead at 15-13.
- For the remainder of the half the Valkyries were never able to take back the lead but they stayed within striking distance throughout the opening half of play. Belmont Abbey went into the halftime break with a 32-30 lead over Converse.
- Converse shot 44 percent from the field in the opening half, 30 percent from three-point range and 100 percent from the free throw line.
2nd Half Notes:
- Mason Taylor scored the first points of the second half with a three-pointer from Belmont Abbey. Moments later the Crusaders capped off a 7-2 run with a breakaway dunk from Marion Lacy Jr.
- The Valkyries stayed poised however in the face of adversity as moments later the Valkyries found themselves right back in the game following a Porcil mid-range jumper. Trey Smith hit a fastbreak jumper and Converse was back within a point. Dawkins stole the ball on the Crusaders next possession and gave Converse a 45-44 lead with 13:17 to play in the game.
- A timely timeout called by the Belmont Abbey coaching staff proved to be beneficiary for the Crusaders as they scored coming out of the timeout break.
- Charles Solomon made a layup with 9:56 to play and the Crusaders once again held a three-point lead at 50-47. For the next eight minutes of game time the Valkyries stayed within a possession of Belmont Abbey.
- With 1:56 to play in the game, Dawkins sank a pair of free throws to tie the game at 62. On the Crusaders next possession, Burgess III stole the ball and passed it forward to Dawkins who found Warlick for the go-ahead three-pointer.
- Bojovic and Warlick scored the final six-points of the game for Converse as the Valkyries held on to beat the Crusaders at home.
- Converse shot 55 percent from the field in the second half, 20 percent from the three-point line and 88 percent from the free throw line.
