SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Converse University volleyball team fell 3-1 (15-25, 27-29, 27-25, 25-20) to North Greenville on Saturday afternoon inside the Weisiger Center.
Converse (6-8, 3-3 CC) went toe-to-toe with North Greenville (9-7, 6-0) but a few errors in each set proved to be costly for the Valkyries in the end. The match had 20 combined tied scores and had 10 lead changes with the exception of the fourth set.
In the opening set the two squads were deadlocked through the first 16 points of the match, before Converse used a 5-0 run to take a 13-8 lead in the set. The momentum was short lived however as the Crusaders called a key timeout to halt the Valkyries offensive assault. North Greenville finished the period on a 15-1 run to take the opening set.
Converse held the momentum in the early moments of the second set as they raced out to a 5-1 advantage over North Greenville. Midway through the period the Crusaders used a 5-0 run to take an 11-9 lead over Converse. For the remainder of the period the two teams went back-and-forth until Converse pulled away with a 3-0 spurt late in the stanza. Holding a 25-24 edge the Valkyries looked to end the period on a 4-0 run, but Paige Campbell registered a kill for the Crusaders to tie the set once again.
