SPARTANBURG, S.C. – On a bright and sunny day at Weisiger Stadium the Converse University women's lacrosse team was edged out 11-9 by the Chowan Hawks.
The game was a back-and-forth contest between the two squads as there were six ties and seven lead changes in the low scoring game. Less than 40 seconds of game time had ticked away off the clock before Cameryn Barrow scored the opening goal of the match for Chowan (2-7, 1-4 CC). Roughly six minutes later
Rhianna Warner (Duncan, S.C.) tied the game with a free position goal.
With 5:53 remaining in the opening period, Grace Taylor scored off a pass from Charity Brown to take a 2-1 edge over the Valkyries. With less than a minute to go in the quarter Libby Stevens (Spartanburg, S.C.) found Cassidy O'Neill (Red Deer, Canada) for the equalizer.
Coming out of the quarter break both teams proved to be evenly matched as neither side was able to crack the scoreboard in the first six minutes of the period.
With 8:48 to play in the stanza, Morgan Grosse scored an unassisted goal to break the 2-2 standstill. A few minutes later O'Neill scored her second goal of the game to tie the game at three once again. With about a minute to play in the opening half,
Haleigh McSwain (Spartanburg, S.C.) found Stevens on a woman-up opportunity to give the Valkyries their first lead of the game. Converse (0-11, 0-5 CC) went into the halftime break with a 4-3 edge over Chowan.
In the opening minutes of the third period, Chowan's Cameryn Barrow found the back of the net for the second time in the match to tie the game at four. The Valkyries offense came alive as their defense forced back-to-back turnovers. O'Neill found both
Madelyn Robinson (Boiling Springs, S.C.) and Stevens for back-to-back goals against the Hawks. Despite playing down a player, the Hawks scored with 11:16 to play to pull within a goal of the Valkyries.
Two minutes later, Leia Cabradillia tied the game at six following an unassisted goal. The Hawks scored two more goals and held an 8-6 edge over the Valkyries with just 5:45 to play in the period. Warner once again stepped up for the Valkyries offense and scored back-to-back less than minute apart to tie the game at eight.
However, a Grace Taylor goal with 49 seconds to play in third the quarter gave Chowan a 9-8 lead heading into the final period of action.
In the final quarter the Hawks scored twice and built upon their lead. Stevens scored with nine seconds remaining in the game to secure her third hat trick of the season.
