SUMTER, S.C. – The Converse University women's tennis team lost 4-2 to Barton in the opening round of the Conference Carolinas Championships on Friday afternoon.
The Valkyries conclude the season with a 7-13 overall record, however, the women's team started off the day in a positive position with a win in the doubles portion of the contest. The Valkyries No. 3 doubles tandem of
Marleen Prinz and
Valentina Aparicio picked up a 6-3 win to take an early 1-0 lead. The No. 2 doubles duo of
Luiza Estrada and
Brooke Benefield fell 6-3, sending it to a winner takes all No. 1 doubles match. The Valkyries top tandem pairing of
Maria Belen Vendrell and
Tonya Glogowski-Watson won a 6-4 decision to capture the doubles point for Converse.
Despite the early 1-0 lead the Valkyries did not fair very well in the singles portion of the match. Vendrell won at the No. 1 singles court in straight sets to give the Valkyries their only singles win of the afternoon. Barton's four consecutive wins at the No.2, No.3, No. 4 and No.5 courts gave the Valkyries an early exit from the Conference Carolinas Championship.
