Slow Start Hurts Valkyries against Francis Marion

FLORENCE, S.C.  – The Converse University men's basketball team fell 83-71 to Francis Marion on Saturday afternoon in the Smith Center.  
 
With the loss, Converse fall to 5-20 overall and 4-15 in Conference Carolinas action. The Valkyries remain winless on the road this season and they have now lost 11 straight matches dating back to the start of January. Francis Marion improves to 11-11 overall and 9-11 in Conference Carolinas play.
 
1st Half Notes:
  • Alex Cox made the first basket of the game for either side with a three-pointer at the 19:24 mark of the period.
  • Francis Marion opened the game on an 8-0 run, Earl Burgess III (Spartanburg, S.C.) scored the first basket of the game for Converse with 16:57 to play.
  • The Patriots used a 14-6 run over the next four minutes of game time to expand their lead.
  • The Valkyries best offensive run came between 9:00-4:40 on the game clock with a 15-6 run.
  • The two teams went shot for shot down the stretch with the Valkyries edging out the Patriots 10-9.
  • Converse trailed 52-36 going into the halftime break, the Valkyries shot 42 percent from the field, 44 percent from three-point range and 57 percent from the free throw line.
  • Burgess III and Nate Gordon each had 7-points in the first half of play, Burgess III also led the team with 5 rebounds. Jimmie Sanders III (Dallas, Texas) recorded 5 assists in the opening half.  
 
2nd Half Notes:
  • Francis Marion opened the second half on an 11-5 run.
  • With 12:05 remaining in the period the Valkyries began to make a move offensively. Sanders III knocked down a three-pointer and on the Valkyries next possession Elijah Pitts hit a three of his own.
  • Converse held the momentum throughout the second half with a 17-7 run that brought the Valkyries back within 11-points of the Patriots with 3:19 to play.
  • The Valkyries finished the game on an 11-9 run but time ran out before they could complete the comeback.
  • Converse outscored Francis Marion 35-31 in the second half. The Valkyries shot 44 percent from the field, 37 percent from three-point range and 37 percent from the free throw line.  
Notables:
  • Sanders III led the Valkyries with 16 points and 8 assists against the Patriots. Burgess III finished second on the team with 14 points and he posted a team best 8 rebounds. Elijah Pitts rounds out the Valkyries double-digit scorers with 10 points in the loss.
  • Francis Marion had four players end the game in double-figures, Nick Silva (20pts), Tionne Rollins (17pts), Alex Cox (16pts) and Jonah Pierce (11pts).  
 
Next Up:
The Valkyries will be back at home on Monday night to battle the Barton Bulldogs in the penultimate home matchup of the season.
