Valkyries Second Half Comeback Falls Short Against Lenoir-Rhyne

HICKORY, N.C. – The Converse University men's basketball team outscored Lenoir-Rhyne 32-31 in the second half but it was not enough as the Valkyries lost to the Bears 67-58 at Shuford Memorial Arena on Saturday afternoon.

Converse falls to 1-5 overall on the season, while Lenoir-Rhyne improves to 4-1 overall and 2-1 against Conference Carolinas schools. The Valkyries shot 57 percent from the field and 33 percent from beyond the arch in the second half of the game against the Bears.

The Valkyries missed the opening shot of the game but on their second possession Bosko Bojovic scored the first points of the game with 19:01 to play in the opening period. Lenoir-Rhyne then countered with a 10-4 run to take the early advantage over the Valkyries. With 8:12 to play in the period Aaron Porcil made a layup to pull the Valkyries within a point at 18-17.
Converse was never within striking distance again of the Bears in the opening half as Lenoir-Rhyne went 18-4 down the stretch. Going into the halftime break the Valkyries trailed 36-26 inside Shuford Arena.

In the opening moments of the second half Jay Mitchell opened the period on a personal 9-3 run to pull the Valkyries back within four points at 39-35. Moments later Uzziah Dawkins knocked down a jumper in the paint to put the Valkyries within a pair of Lenoir-Rhyne.

The Valkyries were unable to keep up the pressure on the Bears offense and take the momentum away. A few moments later the Bears had a 10-point lead once again and the Valkyries were forced to respond once again. Unfortunately, time ran out before the Valkyries were able to attempt another run.

Mitchell led the team with 17-points in the match, Bojovic finished second on the team with 10-points and Jordan Warlick finished third on the team with 9-points. Warlick had a team best 7-rebounds and tied for the team lead with Mitchell with 3-assists.

The Valkyries will host North Greenville on Wednesday night at the Weisiger Center.
