SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Converse University field hockey team scored five second half goals against Lander on Friday night to punch their ticket to the South Atlantic Conference Tournament Championship game on Sunday afternoon at Weisiger Stadium.
The Valkyries offenses set the tone from the start as they outshot Lander 16-0 in the opening half of play. Bearcats goalie tandem of Kelsey Gibbons and Isabel Elenga kept Lander in the match by making nine first half saves. With about five minutes to go in the second quarter, it appeared that the Valkyries had finally broken through with a goal but it was waved off by the officials.
Following a scoreless half, the Valkyries top scorers began to take control of the game,
Lotte Kanters found
Catalina Pistaccio for the games first goal in the third quarter of action. Then in the fourth quarter the flood gates opened up on the offensive side of the pitch. Pistaccio completed her second hat trick of the season with a pair of goals in the period.
Caroline Blair also finished with a goal and Kanters picked up her lone goal of the match off a penalty stroke with four minutes remaining in the game. Katners finished the game with five points in the match.
With the win on Friday night the Valkyries advance to their second consecutive South Atlantic Conference Tournament Championship game. Last season, the Valkyries defeated Limestone on their home turf to capture the programs first ever tournament championship.
