Valkyries Falter against North Greenville

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Converse University women's basketball fell 66-56 to North Greenville on Saturday afternoon at the Weisiger Center.

Converse (3-5, 2-3 Conference Carolinas) concludes one of their busiest weeks of the season with a 2-2 record against their opponents. North Greenville (1-6, 1-3 Conference Carolinas) earned their first win of the season against the Valkyries.

Converse won the opening tip-off and Lindsey Hardin (Inman, S.C.) scored the first points of the game. Moments later Sydney Wilson (Henderson, Tenn.) scored a fast break layup and Alisa Davenport (Rolesville, N.C.) hit an open three-pointer. The quick offensive outburst forced North Greenville to call an early timeout down 7-2.

Following the timeout break, Hardin scored another layup and the Valkyries held a 9-2 advantage. Then the unthinkable happened as the Valkyries were unable to score over the next several minutes of game time. Over a six-minute timespan the Crusaders went on a 17-2 run to take a 19-9 lead over the Valkyries.

Trailing 24-14 going into the second quarter, the Valkyries offense began to chip away at the Crusaders lead. With 3:37 remaining in the half, North Greenville held a 33-22 advantage over Converse. The Valkyries ended the period on a 9-0 run and trailed 33-31 at the halftime break.

In the third quarter the Valkyries were outscored 13-8 by North Greenville. In the fourth quarter the Valkyries attempted several comebacks and came close to tying the game on a number of occasions. Davenport recorded a pair of free throws and the Valkyries trailed 52-49 with 5:00 remaining in the game. This ended up being the slimmest margin of the fourth quarter as the Crusaders went on to win by double-digits.

Hardin led the team with a 21-point effort, while Wilson recorded her second consecutive double-double with a 16-point, 10-rebound effort. Davenport rounded out the Valkyries double-digit scorers with 10-points in the loss.
