Mitchell Leads Valkyries in Loss against USC Upstate

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Converse University men's basketball team fell 78-38 on Saturday afternoon to USC Upstate inside the G.B. Hodge Center.
 
Converse won the opening tip-off but it took nearly four minutes of game time for either team to score. Jalen Breazeale scored the opening basket for the Spartans with 15:55 to play in the half, moments later Bryson Mozone scored for USC Upstate to make it 4-0.
 
Jay Mitchell (Clemmons, N.C.) scored the first basket of the game for Converse at the 12:30 mark of the first half. A few seconds later Josh Aldrich made a layup for USC Upstate to give the Spartans an 8-2 advantage. In the opening 10-minutes of action both teams were a combined 4-26 from the field. Earl Burgess III (Spartanburg, S.C.) scored the Valkyries second basket with 7:30 to play in the opening period.
 
Both teams started to pickup their offense in the closing moments of the half. Mozone hit a last second three-pointer to give the Spartans a 25-12 advantage heading into the halftime break. Jordan Warlick (Irmo, S.C.) led the Valkyries with six first half points.
 
USC Upstate opened the second half on an 8-0 run and forced the Valkyries to call a quick timeout. Elijah Pitts (Gainesville, Ga.) ended the Valkyries scoring drought with a three-pointer at the 15:30 mark of the second half. A few moments later Mitchell hit a corner three-pointer and the Valkyries trailed 44-21.
 
For the remainder to the half both sides worked on different offensive and defensive sets. Both USC Upstate and Converse emptied the bench and allowed everyone to play in the game.
 
Mitchell led the Valkyries in points (12) and in rebounds (6), Pitts tied for the team lead with 12-points and Warlick rounded out the top three with 9-points in the game. Sigurd Lorange (Trondheim, Norway) led the team with four assists and three steals.
 
Next Up:
The men's basketball team will be back in action this coming Monday against the Limestone Saints. It will be the Valkyries fourth game in five days, tip-off is slated for 4:00 p.m.
