The Series
This will be the 11
th time in program history Converse and Newberry have met since the start of the 2017 season. The Wolves hold an 8-2 advantage in the overall series lead, while Converse won the last matchup 2-1 in overtime. The last three matches have ended in overtime between the two schools, with the Wolves getting the better of the Valkyries in two of the three meetings. This is the second consecutive season in which the Valkyries and Wolves will meet in the Field Hockey Championships. Last season, the Wolves eliminated Converse 2-1 in double-overtime at Newberry.
Converse Notes:
- The Valkyries are 10-6 overall this season and 8-4 in South Atlantic/Conference Carolinas play.
- Converse is coming off a 2-1 loss to Mount Olive on Saturday afternoon. Catalina Pistaccio scored the Valkyries only goal of the match in the fourth quarter.
- The Valkyries swept the Big 4 postseason awards earlier this week, with Mira Polzer earning Offensive Player of the Year Honors, Ciriaca Petitto earned Defensive Player of the Year Honors, Lotte Kanters earned Freshman of the Year Honors and Valerie Clarke earned Coach of the Year recognition.
- Converse recorded a program high five all-conference selections this season, Mira Polzer (First-Team), Ciriaca Petitto (First-Team), Lotte Kanters (First Team), Catalina Pistaccio (First Team) and Bo Linders (Second Team).
- The Valkyries are averaging 2.31 goals per game and average just over 15 shots per contest.
- Converse has attempted 114 corners this season and the Valkyrie goalkeepers have combined for 44 saves on the season.
- Mira Polzer leads the nation in assists per game (1.00) and leads the South Atlantic Conference in total assists (17). Polzer is tied for second in the conference in points (29) and third in total shots (51). The Germany native is third on the team in goals scored with six on the season.
- Lotte Kanters leads the team in goals scored (8) and game-winning goals (4). Kanters is second on the team with 19 points this season.
- The Valkyries have had 12 different goal scorers this season and eight different players have contributed assists.
- Ciriaca Petitto has made seven starts in goal this season for the Valkyries. Petitto has made 23 saves and has posted a .767 save percentage.
Newberry Notes:
- Newberry is 10-7 overall and 6-6 in South Atlantic/Conference Carolinas play.
- The Wolves are just 3-5 on the road this season but they defeated Mount Olive 4-2 in the Quarterfinals of the tournament.
- Mount Olive got out to an early lead against the Wolves by Lily Drury tied the game with two minutes to go before the halftime break. Mount Olive took a 2-1 lead just two-minutes into the third quarter before Newberry tied the game once again. A pair of fourth quarter goals helped the Wolves advance in the tournament.
- Newberry is averaging 2.35 goals per game and 16.9 shots per contest. The Wolves have attempted 138 penalty corners and have made 100 saves on the season.
- Yasmin De Meyer leads the team in points (26), goals scored (9), assists (8) and game-winning goals (3). Lily Drury leads the team in total shots (47) and shots on goal (30).
- Grace Lee has started 15 games in goal for the Wolves this season and has made 87 saves on 158 shots faced.
