SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Converse University women's basketball team fell 60-41 to Mount Olive on Tuesday night in the Weisiger Center.
The loss snaps a two-game winning streak for Converse (2-4, 1-2 Conference Carolinas) dating back to last week's win over Erskine. In the early moments of the first quarter, neither team was able to put the ball through the net. Then with 6:40 to go in the period,
Sydney Wilson (Henderson, Tenn.) scored the first basket of the game for either side. Mount Olive (3-0, 2-0 Conference Carolinas) ended the quarter on a 14-5 run against the Valkyries.
The shooting woes continued in the second quarter for both teams despite the Trojans starting the quarter on a 5-1 run. The Valkyries were outscored in the second quarter 17-7 by Mount Olive. At the halftime break, Converse trailed 31-14 as Ivanda Hudjakova hit a three-pointer with 36 seconds to go in the first period.
At the start of the third quarter the Valkyries forced the ball down low and Wilson scored the Valkyries first five points of the period. Converse was outscored 11-8 in the third period and neither team scored a point in the final two-minutes of game time in the frame.
In the fourth quarter, the Valkyries offense came alive and outscored Mount Olive 19-18. Converse finished the period shooting 60 percent from the field and a perfect 4-4 from beyond the arch. The offensive outburst was a little to late however, as the Trojans came away with the victory over Converse.
Wilson led the team with an 11-point and seven rebound performance.
Lindsey Hardin (Inman, S.C.) finished second on the team with 8-points and 6-rebounds against the Trojans.
