Valkyries Falter Against Furman in Exhibition Matchup

GREENVILLE, S.C. – The Converse University women's basketball team dropped a 101-58 decision to Furman on Wednesday night in exhibition action inside Timmons Arena.
 
Converse (0-2) won the opening tip-off against the Paladins and junior center Sydney Wilson (Henderson, Tenn.) scored on the opening possession. Furman then countered with a 13-2 run, before Keyshuna Fair (Anderson, S.C.) ended the run with a layup at the 6:22 mark of the first quarter. The Paladins ended the first period on a 14-0 run and led 27-4 going into the second period of play.
 
Coming out of the quarter break Alliee Pattillo (Douglasville, Ga.) knocked down a corner three-pointer giving the Valkyries early momentum in the period. The Valkyries went on a four-minute scoring drought before Fair hit a three-pointer, giving Converse an even 10-points for the game. On the Valkyries next possession, Fair began to find her rhythm and knocked down her second consecutive three-pointer.
 
Converse finished the second quarter shooting 41 percent from the field, 55 percent from beyond the arch and an 50 percent from the free throw line. Fair led all-scorers with 11-points at the halftime break, while Zahra Cross (Austin, Texas) added four-points in the first half. Sydney James led the Paladins with 9-points and 5-rebounds in the first half.   
 
Lindsey Hardin (Inman, S.C.) scored the Valkyries first field goal of the second half with a layup at the 6:05 mark of the third quarter. On the Valkyries next possession Eva Carballo (Madrid, Spain) found Daven West (Rock Hill, S.C.) for a layup in the paint. After a few minutes of not scoring Carballo produced a highlight of the year candidate with a between the legs pass to Hardin who nailed the jumper with 2:22 to play in the third quarter. Converse finished with 17-points in the period.
 
In the fourth and final quarter of the night the Valkyries offense got off to a hot start, Wilson scored the first two baskets of the period. Moments later Cross scored on a layup and the Valkyries began to build a little bit of momentum. Carballo hit a three-pointer off a Jordan Brown (McCormick, S.C.) pass with 5:09 to play in the game. The Valkyries finished the fourth quarter with 22-points and shot 53 percent from the line. Converse shot 66 percent from beyond the arch and 100 percent from the free throw line in the final period of action.
 
Fair led the team with 16-points, Wilson finished second on the team with 13-points and Carballo contributed 10-points in the loss. Brown led the team with 7-rebounds on the night, while Alisa Davenport (Rolesville, N.C.) led the team with two blocks in the match.
 
Next Up:
Converse will have a few days off before they host King University on Saturday afternoon at the Weisiger Center. Tip-off is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
