Nashville, TN – For the second time in 3 days, the Converse Women's Basketball Team was featured on ESPN+ facing a Division 1 team. Today, the Valkyries would take on Lipscomb University in Nashville, TN for their second exhibition of the season. Coming off a tough loss to Furman, Converse was determined to come out Friday afternoon and give a strong performance against the Lady Bison.
The first quarter did not start out he way the Valkyries wanted, as they quickly fell behind 7-0. However, their offense would come to life and go on a 6-0 run , behind
Lindsey Hardin's scoring. A layup by
Sierra Davenport, at the 5:16 mark of the quarter, gave Converse its first lead of the game, 10-9. Lipscomb regained the lead 11-10, as a result of a Taylor Clark layup. Lipscomb would then extend their lead to 19-12 from a 3-pointer by Sydney Shelton and another by Taylor Clark. A 3-pointer by
Ellen Nardella cut the lead to 19-15, and that is the way the first quarter would end.
Lipscomb's Jalyn Holcomb started the second quarter off with a jumper in the paint to give the Lady Bison a 21-15 advantage. The Valkyries would next answer with a layup by
Eva Carballo. Taylor Clark, once again, helped Lipscomb extend their lead to 8 points after converting on a jump shot. However, at the 1:38 mark of the quarter,
Lindsey Hardin came down the court to hit a 3-Pointer, closing to the gap to 32-25. Towards the end of the quarter, Lipscomb added a free throw to head into the locker room up 33-25 over Converse.
The third quarter saw the Valkyries keep the Lady Bison's lead under double digits for a while, but turnovers would hurt any chances they had of cutting into it. A 3-pointer by Lipscomb's Taylor Clark, followed by a layup from Sydney Shelton, helped the Lady Bison start to increase their lead to 14, 48-34. After a media timeout,
Lindsey Hardin hit her third 3-pointer of the game to pull Converse to within 10, but unfortunately, that would be the closest Converse could get. As the horn sounded to the end the quarter, the Valkyries found themselves down by a score of 56-41.
At the start of the fourth quarter,
Ayanna Parker hit a 3-pointer to pull the Valkyries to within 12. However, Lipscomb would take advantage of Converse turnovers and suddenly found themselves up by 20, 64-44. Despite 3-Pointers from
Jordan Brown,
Faith Sides and
Lindsey Hardin, the Valkyries were unable to cut back into the Lady Bison's lead. As the game came to an end, Converse would fall to Lipscomb by a final score of 82-60.
The Valkyries were led by
Lindsey Hardin with 22 points, 3 assists and four 3-Pointers, followed by
Jordan Brown who finished with 10 points, went 2-2 from the 3-Point line and grabbed 6 rebounds. In addition,
Keyshuna Fair was very active on the boards, pulling down 6 rebounds, as well (1 offensive and 5 defensive). This was Converse's 3
rd game in 4 days and they will now take a much-needed break. They still remain 1-0 on the season, as the games against Furman and Lipscomb count as exhibitions for the team. The team has one more exhibition at UNC-Greensboro on January 3
rd, which can again be seen on ESPN+. After that, they will begin conference play, at home, on January 13
th against Erskine College. Converse will enjoy the Holidays and come back ready to show that they can be a contender in the Conference Carolinas title race.
