Valkyries Put Up a Fight, Fall Short to Southern Wesleyan

CENTRAL, S.C. - The Converse Volleyball team (3-15)  traveled to Southern Wesleyan University on Saturday to take on the Warriors (4-10) at the Tysinger Gymnasium. The Valkyries dropped the Conference Carolinas match in straight sets.

The Purple and Gold dominated in the opening points of the first set taking an easy 7-3 lead. But four straight points from the Warriors put them right back in position to tie the score up 10-10. Converse retaliated with a three-point run to take the lead again but it was not enough to top a five point burst from SWU who took the first game 25-21. 

Looking to bounce back after a close first set, the Vals push forward early in the second game winning the first five points. Converse held onto the lead until another five point push from the Warriors put them ahead 12-9. The remainder of the match belonged to Southern Wesleyan who eventually secured the 25-18 victory. 

The Valkyries got off to a rough start in the pivotal third set allowing the Warriors to go up 7-3. But a kill by Morgan Pearson tied the match back up 7-7.Points were evenly exchanged later in the set placing both teams tied 24-24. Despite a valiant effort from the Purple and Gold, SWU took the final set 26-24. 

Morgan Pearson led Converse offensively with 10 kills to go along with 11 digs, notching her sixth double-double of the season. Lauren Tharrington also recorded 21 assists in Saturday's game, her most of the season, while Sydney Allen contributed 22 digs. 

Converse will be back in action on Wednesday, October 3 as they face Southern Wesleyan again, this time on home turf at Hannah Gymnasium. Game start is scheduled for 7 p.m.
