Box Score

BELMONT, N.C. – The Converse (0-6, 0-2) Field Hockey team was upended by Belmont Abbey (2-2, 2-1) by the final of 3-0 on Tuesday evening. The Crusaders posted a single goal in the first half and two more in the second to secure the conference win.

Marina Montes-Nino led the Valkyries with four shots, including two on goal, whole Victoria Bailey posted a season-high three shots. Flore Samsi and Bo Linders added two shots each.

After several shots from both teams were turned away by the goalies, Belmont Abbey finally pushed through in the 14th minute following a goal from Xanthe Rademeyer. From that point it was a defensive battle as each team had opportunities to score, but could not get the ball into the back of the cage. The Crusaders took the 1-0 lead into the break.

That lead doubled in the 41st minute after a goal from Katana Cawley. Belmont Abbey scratched across a late goal in the 64th minute to take the game by the final of 3-0.

The Crusaders held a 28-12 advantage on shots taken as well as 15-6 on penalty corners. Ciriaca Petitto played all 70 minutes in goal and came up with a season-high 17 saves for the Valkyries.

Converse will be back in action on Saturday, September 29 as it plays host to Coker College in a South Atlantic Conference Conference Carolinas showdown. That contest is scheduled for 3 p.m. at Spartan High.
