Box Score SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Converse (7-24, 2-11 CC) volleyball team avenged a sweep at the hands of Erskine (7-20, 4-10 CC) just three days ago, dominating the Fleet in a 3-1 decision on Tuesday evening inside Hannah Gymnasium. The Valkyries put on a clinic at the service line, tallying 16 service aces en route to set scores of 19-25, 25-11, 26-24, and 25-17.
Ansley Hodge and Morgan Pearson led the way offensively with 10 kills each, while Pearson also served up eight aces. Elizabeth Yohe just missed a double-double, finishing the night with eight kills and a team-high 21 digs. Sydney Allen contributed 13 digs and Lauren Tharrington dished out 32 assists.
Erskine jumped out to a quick 6-0 advantage in the first set, but a 6-1 spurt by the Vals trimmed the deficit to a single point (7-6). However, the Fleet regained the momentum, pushing the score back to a comfortable eight points (19-11). Converse got to within four (23-19), but two straight gave EC a 1-0 match lead.
The Valkyries came out on fire in the second set, scoring six of the first eight points. A kill by Rebecca Massengill narrowed the gap to 10-8, but a massive 15-3 run by the Purple and Gold evened the match at 1-1. Pearson contributed six aces during the pivotal second frame, while also collecting the final eight points from the service line.
Set three was very evenly contested as only a few points separated the two teams from the start. Converse earned a little breathing room at 17-13 following a monstrous kill by Yohe, but Erskine battled back to eventually knot the contest at 23-all. After trading the next two points, the Vals took the final pair of points with back-to-back kills by Hodge and Kaylee Owens, taking a 2-1 match lead.
The fourth frame mirrored the third as the two teams battled back-and-forth, exchanging the initial 24 points of the set. However, with the score even at 12-12, Converse ran off 12 of 15 to set up match point at 24-15. Erskine staved off two consecutive final points, but a rejection at the net by Hodge and Kiara Cannon sealed the deal, giving the Valkyries the 3-1 win.
Katy Torgerson and Kayla Duncan led the Fleet with 15 and 12 kills, respectively. Maddie Wilson contributed 35 assists and Rachel Meyer anchored the defense with 27 digs.
Converse will be back in action on Thursday, November 1 as it plays host to league-leading Emmanuel. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m.
