Box Score DUE WEST, S.C. – The Converse (6-24, 1-11 CC) volleyball team was taken down 3-0 at Erskine (7-19, 4-9 CC) on Saturday afternoon. Each set was close, but the Flying Fleet were able to take all three to earn the Conference Carolinas win.
Alexis Pitts led the Valkyries on offense with nine kills, while a trio of Vals recorded four kills each. Lauren Tharrington dished out 18 assists and Elizabeth Yohe tallied a team-high 13 digs. Erskine's JoJo Taylor led all players with 12 kills.
The opening set was a nip-and-tuck affair as the two teams traded the initial 38 points. However, with the score knotted at 19-19, Erskine took back-to-back points to take a small lead late. That two-point lead held in tact the remainder of the set as EC took a 1-0 match lead, winning the first frame 25-23.
Erskine took advantage of unforced errors by Converse in the second set, building a lead of four points (17-13). The Valkyries trimmed the deficit to 20-17, but that was as close as the second set would get as the Fleet took a commanding 2-0 match lead with a 25-21 frame win.
Set three was much of the same as both teams tried to gain an offensive advantage. A kill by Kiara Cannon locked the set at 14-all, but Erskine collected three in a row and five of six to take control 19-15. From that point the Valkyries tried to make a comeback and force the game into a fourth set, but the Flying Fleet was able to finish off the set 25-22 and the match, 3-0.
Converse will be back in action on Tuesday, October 30 as it plays Erskine to complete the home-and-home series with the Fleet. That contest also starts a three-game homestand to finish out the regular season. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m.
