Box Score NEWBERRY, S.C. – A late flurry of goals by Lindenwood (7-2) handed the Converse (0-7) field hockey team a 5-0 loss on Monday afternoon at Seltzer Field on the campus of Newberry College. After playing stellar defense against a potent offense in the first half, the Valkyries allowed four goals in the second half.
The majority of the first half was defensive-minded as each team had opportunities to take the lead, but could not get the ball into the back of the cage. However, Lindenwood finally broke through in the 32nd minute, just three minutes before halftime, following a deflected ball that found its way through the Valkyrie defense. Jacqueline Wadsley played the initial 35 minutes in goal, allowing the single score while collected six saves.
Lindenwood put the pressure on Converse 10 minutes into the second session, scoring a pair of goals within two minutes of each other to balloon its lead to 3-0. Goals in the 63rd and 66th minute ran the score to 5-0 and the Valkyries played catch-up the rest of the contest. Unfortunately, the deficit was too large to overcome and Converse fell by the final of 5-0.
The Lions held a 23-6 advantage on shots, as well as a 10-3 mark on penalty corners. Flore Samsi led the Purple and Gold with four shots, including two shots on goal. Bo Linders and Kate Hollamby added one shot each.
Converse will be back in action on Wednesday, October 3 as it plays host to Belmont Abbey College at Spartanburg High School. That contest is slated to begin at 7:30 p.m.
