Box Score NEWBERRY, S.C. – The Converse College (0-5) Field Hockey team dropped a 4-2 decision to the Newberry Wolves (3-2) on Wednesday evening. After going into the half tied 1-1, Newberry scored three goals in a five-minute span of the second half to open the game up.
Newberry outshot Converse by a wide margin (14-2), including eight on goal. However, the two shots the Valkyries were able to take resulted in goals each time. The Wolves were awarded 11 penalty corners to the Valkyries seven. Marina Montes-Nino and Madison Conlon tallied the lone shots for Converse as well as the two scores. Three different players recorded three shots for NC, while Brady Keeler tallied two goals. Ciriaca Petitto finished the day with three saves.
The Wolves jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the 12th minute after Farai Kawonde found the back of the cage. However, that lead was erased in the 27th minute as Conlon sent a laser past the Wolves keeper, knotting the contest at 1-1. The teams headed to the locker room with the same score.
A quiet first 10 minutes of the second half led to the three-goal barrage by the Wolves, putting them comfortably ahead 4-1 early in the second. From that point the offense was at a minimum until Montes-Nino found the back of the box in the 69th minute off a beautiful feed from Flore Samsi. Unfortunately, that was the last score of the contest for either team as Newberry took the 4-2 victory.
Converse will be back in action on Friday, September 15 as they travel to face Transylvania. The contest is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.
