Team Effort In Dominate Road Victory Over SWU

CENTRAL, S.C.- The Valkyries basketball team picked up a crucial double-figure victory over Conference Carolinas foe, Southern Wesleyan, 91-75 on Wednesday evening.

Converse (4-14, 3-11) was led by the trio of Yashee Johnson (West Columbia, S.C.), Erin Horne (Orlando, Fla.) and Kassidy Moorhouse (Anderson, S.C.) all posting career-highs.  Y. Johnson notched a double-double scoring 20 points and grabbing 13 boards.  Horne scored 19 points with 15 points in the first half.  Moorhouse chipped with 17 points knocking down four treys.

Y. Johnson added four assists, two blocks and two steals to go with her double-double.

The Valkyries found themselves trailing 16-8 with three minutes to go in the first quarter before Kassidy Moorhouse knocked down a trey to spark a 10-2 run to end the quarter to knot things at 18-all.  After the Moorhouse triple, Erin Horne scored the next seven points for the Valkyries.  SWU (4-16, 1-13) added a lay-up.

Erin Horne and Kassidy Moorhouse continued the Valkyries' run giving Converse a 29-18 run just 2:13 into the second stanza.  Horne started off the quarter with a fastbreak lay-up.  Horne created a steal and found Moorhouse who drew a foul behind the arc.  Moorhouse knocked down her three freebies.  Horne continued to attack off a her pickpocket making the lay-up and finishing the old fashioned three-point play.  Moorhouse ended the run with a trey from the wing.

Converse outscored SWU 30-11 in the second quarter to gain a 48-29 advantage into the locker room.  Erin Horne and Kassidy Moorhouse both had 15 points at the break.  Horne finished with a career-high six steals.

Yashee Johnson took over in the second half scoring eight of the Valkyries 12 points in the third quarter.  To start the third quarter, the Valkyries went on a 10-3 run to push their lead out to 58-32.  SWU ended the quarter on a 11-2 run to pull things to 60-43.

The Valkyries kept their double-figure lead throughout the fourth with SWU getting to within 11, 73-62 with 3:29 remaining in the contest.

Down the stretch, Converse knocked down 18-18 from the charity stripe to maintain their lead.

Converse knocked down a school record 31 free throws while shooting 83.8% from the stripe.  It was the first time Converse has scored over 90+ points in a single game since Jan. 23, 2007 against Lees-McRae.

Paige Johnson (Greenville, S.C.) helped the Valkyries with 10 points converting 8-8 from the line.  Brianna James (Spartanburg, S.C.) added seven points, while Dah'Vielle Lucas (Mauldin, S.C.) chipped in with eight points.  Hannah Anderson (Savannah, Ga.) scored four points on 2-3 from the floor.

Converse returns to action on Saturday, February 6 against Erskine in part of the Valkyries' annual PINK game.  The contest is also Converse Alumni game.  Tip-off is at 2pm.
