Box Score SPARTANBURG, S.C- Although the Valkyries Basketball team was not playing for a Conference Carolinas tournament berth, there was a lot on the line for Converse on Senior Night. Converse picked up the 74-67 victory against Belmont Abbey in the final Conference Carolinas contest of the season Friday evening.
The Valkyries finished the season tying the school record for wins in a single season with seven wins. Converse finished the season 7-19 overall and 6-16 in conference play.
"I am proud of the way that we finished the season," said head coach Dean Walsh. "The team has made great strides this season to play together as one. They should be proud of that. They believed in themselves and felt they could win anytime they stepped on the floor. They made the future for Converse Basketball very bright."
Brianna James (Spartanburg, S.C.) led the Valkyries with 19 points and posted the freshman single season scoring record with 409 points. Senior Ashley Salgado (Ottumwa, Iowa) went out on a high note posting a career-high 17 points and dishing out seven assists. Logan Hollis (Spartanburg, S.C.) scored at-will down low with 16 points with 8-11 from the floor.
Yashee Johnson (West Columbia, S.C.) posted double-figure rebounds and had seven rejections. Johnson needed three blocks to take the reigns of the single season blocks record. Johnson dethroned former Valkyrie Lauren Mueller after finishing the season with 67 blocks.
Converse started off the contest quick with Ashley Salgado scoring just six seconds into the game with a lay-up. Belmont Abbey (8-20, 7-15) would take the early lead 5-2 before the Valkyries regained the lead with back-to-back baskets by Logan Hollis.
The Valkyries would lead 18-13 after the first ten minutes. Belmont Abbey would use a big second quarter to regain the lead and take a 37-32 advantage into the locker room.
The Crusaders built onto their lead midway through the third quarter on a made three with 6:21 remaining in the quarter at 50-37. Converse would go on a 16-6 run to end the quarter. Ashley Salgado started the run with a lay-up followed by a Bri James jumper. Back-to-back baskets by Salgado would cut it to single digits with 4:41 remaining in the third.
After the media timeout in the third, Salgado added a freebie followed by Khyrstal Ellis' (Greenville, S.C.) lay-up cut it to a six point deficit. Kassidy Moorhouse (Anderson, S.C.) knocked down one of her three treys to end the run and head into the final 10 minutes of play down 56-53.
The lead would swap hands throughout the fourth quarter until Logan Hollis hit a jumper in the paint with 2:35 remaining in regulation to give the Valkyries the 64-63 lead. Belmont Abbey would cut it to two, 68-66 before Salgado knocked down her two attempts from the charity stripe pushed it back to a four point Valkyries lead.
After 1-2 from the line for the Crusaders to cut it to a one possession contest, Bri James and Erin Horne (Orlando, Fla.) would knock down their attempts from the stripe to give the Valkyries the 74-67 victory on senior night.
Converse ended the season with a 3-2 record in their past five contests including back-to-back wins for the first time since 2010-11 season.
