Valkyries Pick Up First Win, Split Twinbill

ST. AUGUSTINE'S, FLA.- In the final day of the Flagler Invitational the Valkyries picked up their first win of the season defeating Dominican (N.Y.) 3-1 after falling to Anderson in straight sets on Saturday afternoon.  Converse improves to 1-2 on the young season.  The win marked the first collegiate win for head coach Brooke Kraham (formerly Stanley).

"I am really happy that we were able to get our first win of the season," said Coach Kraham. "This was a great learning experience for us playing against such tough competition. We are looking forward to continuing our growth as a team moving forward."

Katie Butler (Savannah, Ga.) led the offensive attack with 27 total kills.  JaLesa Beaver (Katy, Texas) totaled 17 kills.  Krislyn Moore (Spartanburg, S.C.) dished out 68 assists.

Match vs Domincan (N.Y.) 3-1 (25-18, 25-20, 16-25, 29-27)

Converse battled against the Chargers of Dominican (N.Y.) to a four set victory.  The Valkyries started off the match with their best set of the year hitting at a .321 clip with 16 kills.  Converse led the entire set jumping out to a 10-4 advantage.  A kill by JaLesa Beaver gave the Valkyries their largest lead of the set moving the score to 20-13.  The Valkyries would go on to win the set 25-18.

The Valkyries would take the second set taking a two set advantage and drop the third set.

Converse and Dominican battled back and forth with neither team able to sustain more than a three point lead.  Converse fell behind 24-23 late but a kill by Cayla Wood (Asheville, N.C.) and Krislyn Moore gave the Valkyries a 25-24 advantage.  The Purple and Gold would tie things up at 26-all and 27-all before stringing back-to-back together off Butler's kill and Beaver's service ace to take the set and the match.

Katie Butler and JaLesa Beaver finished the match a dig shy of a double-double.  Butler finished with 17 kills and nine digs.  Beaver added 10 kills and nine digs.  Krislyn Moore dished out 41 assists.

Journee English (Columbia, S.C.) added kills, Cayla Wood pitched in eight kills.

Match vs Anderson 0-3 (17-25, 21-25, 20-25)

Converse hung tough against 2014 NCAA Tournament participant Anderson.  Once again Butler and Beaver led the way offensively for the Valkyries netting 11 and seven kills respectively.  Krislyn Moore added 27 assists.

Converse has their home opener on Tuesday, September 8 at 6pm against Newberry.
