SPARTANBURG, S.C.- The Valkyries had three in double-figures and unselfish play not enough as Converse fell to Brevard in non-conference action on Monday evening. Converse falls to 2-18 on the season, while Brevard improves to 7-13.
Margo Dill (Hilton Head, S.C.) led the Valkyries with 12 points on 5-11 shooting from the floor. Dill also hauled in a team high six rebounds. Jakyra Washington (Durham, N.C.) and Christhea Mitchell chipped in 10 points apiece in the loss. Logan Hollis (Spartanburg, S.C.) scored seven points and grabbed five boards.
Converse battled with Brevard throughout the first half grabbing an early 10-7 lead after Dill received a pass from Ashley Salgado (Ottumwa, Iowa) on the fast break.
After the under ten media timeout, Brevard went on a 12-2 run to take a 23-14 advantage with 5:30 remaining in the half. Converse would counter with a 5-0 run capped off by a three by Washington. The Tornados would push the lead back to seven with a triple of their own.
Converse battled back with another 5-0 run to cut into the deficit to 26-24. But Brevard would match the run with a 5-0 run before Mitchell hit a fast break jumper from Salagado to end the first half and send the Valkyries into the locker room down 31-26.
Brevard used the three ball to push its lead to 64-43 with 5:31 remaining in the final stanza. Over the final minutes of the contest Converse would go on an 11-2 run. Kayla Garrett (Indianapolis, Ind.) would hit a jumper followed by a Kassidy Moorhouse (Anderson, S.C.) triple. Garrett would add to her total with a fast break lay-up. Garrett would hit a free throw with 57 seconds remaining. Daijah Edmounds-Surratt (Spartanburg, S.C.) tallied two point capped off the run with a free throw by Jenna White (Fort Mill, S.C.).
Converse's defense caused 18 Tornado turnovers swiping 10 steals. Washington would record three of the team's eight rejections. Hollis recorded two blocks.
The Valkyrie offense was unselfish dishing out 17 assists on 21 made baskets. Salgado led the Valkyries with seven assists. Washington, Mitchell and White dished out three dimes apiece.
Brevard outrebounded the Valkyries on the glass 53-38 leading to 15 second chance points and 34 points in the paint.
Converse stays at home hosting Pfeiffer, Wednesday, February 11 at 7pm for Faculty Appreciation Night.
