MOUNT OLIVE, N.C.- Mount Olive dominated the glass and the paint to hand Converse a 71-46 loss in Conference Carolinas play on Saturday afternoon. Converse fell to 4-21 on the season and 3-18 in conference play. UMO improves to 12-15 on the season and 10-11 in league play.
Converse was led by senior Margo Dill (Hilton Head, S.C.) as the only Valkyrie in double-figures with 10 points. Jakyra Washington's (Durham, N.C.) string of six straight contests in double-figures came up short scoring eight points and dished out four assists. Yashee Johnson (West Columbia, S.C.) grabbed a team-high five rebounds and chipped in four points.
Mount Olive started the game off with a bang jumping out to an early 8-0 lead but Converse battled back to make it a one possession game with 8:13 remaining in the first half after Dill would make a lay-up to make it 16-14.
The Trojans would end the half on a 22-6 run to take a 38-20 advantage into the locker room. The Valkyries would miss their six shots of the half scoring all six points from the stripe. Mount Olive scored 20 points in the paint and 13 on second chance opportunities.
Jenna White (Fort Mill, S.C.) would hit a three to open the scoring for the Valkyries out of the break followed by a lay-up by Kayla Garrett (Indianapolis, Ind.). UMO would continue to build on its lead throughout the half capitalizing on 13 Valkyrie turnovers.
Converse was outrebounded on the glass 52-27 leading to UMO gaining the advantage 38-12 in the paint and 18-7 on second chance points.
Converse wraps up the 2014-15 season on the road facing nationally ranked Limestone in Gaffney, S.C., Tuesday, February 24. Tip-off is slated for 5:30pm.
