Converse's Rally Falls Short Against Augusta At Home

Box Score

SPARTANBURG, S.C.- Logan Hollis' career-high 21 points on 8-10 shooting from the floor was not enough for the Valkyries to complete the comeback against Augusta University on Tuesday evening as Converse fell 75-63 in a non-conference contest.

"I appreciate how hard we fought," said head coach Dean Walsh. "We never quit.  When we can figure out how to put a complete game together, we are going to cause some issues in Conference Carolinas play.  I feel like we outplayed them (Augusta) but our turnovers were our demise.  We will take some time to rest up and we will hit it hard when we come back from break."

Converse (2-5) cut the deficit that was at one point an 18 point hole, dug themselves out of that hole and made it a one point game with a minute remaining in the third quarter at 47-48.  With 8:14 remaining in the first half, Augusta (6-2) saw their lead swell to 18 (32-14) before the Valkyries started the chip away.

The Valkyries sparked an 18-5 run to end the second quarter to head into the half down 37-32.  Erin Horne (Orlando, Fla.) started the rally with a lay-up.  Kassidy Moorhouse (Anderson, S.C.) drained one of her three triples to get the crowd behind them.  A fast break and-one by Khrystal Ellis (Greenville, S.C.) followed by a Moorhouse downtown connection cut the Jaguar lead down to seven (25-32).  Ellis posted another fast break lay-up followed by Moorhouse draining her final three of the run made it a two possession contest.  Dah'Vielle Lucas (Mauldin, S.C.) scored a lay-up for the final Valkyrie basket of the half.

Augusta would ramp up the intensity to start the third quarter pushing their lead back to 12 (46-34).  Converse once again made a 13-2 run to cut the deficit down to one (47-48).  Back-to-back jumpers by Brianna James (Spartanburg, S.C.) followed by Logan Hollis (Spartanburg, S.C.) four points sparked the crowd involvement once again.  With the shot clock winding down Bri James connected on a deep three before Hollis hit a jumper in the paint.

Converse kept the contest close throughout the fourth quarter before a handful of turnovers allowed the Jaguars to push their lead to double-digits and run out the clock.

Hollis finished with a career-high 21 points and added seven rebounds (five offensive).  Bri James added 16 points.  Kassidy Moorhouse tallied 11 points.  Yashee Johnson (West Columbia, S.C.) chipped in eight boards and three blocks.  Paige Johnson (Greenville, S.C.) added five assists and six rebounds.

Converse takes time off for the holidays and return to the court Dec. 30 on the road in Florence, S.C. taking on Francis Marion in a non-conference contest before the New Year.
