Box Score SPARTANBURG, S.C.- The Valkyrie rally fell short on Tuesday evening against non-conference foe, Coker, 3-1 (17-25, 19-25, 25-23, 25-27) despite out-hitting the Cobras. Converse drops to 3-12 on the season, while Coker improves to 4-10.
Katie Butler (Savannah, Ga.) posts a double-double featuring 16 kills and 15 digs in the loss. Aeriel Wheeler (Woodruff, S.C.) tallied eight kills, while JaLesa Beaver (Katy, Texas), Cayla Wood (Asheville, N.C.) and Journee English (Columbia, S.C.) post seven, six and five kills respectively.
Krislyn Moore (Spartanburg, S.C.) posted four service aces and nine digs on the evening.
The Valkyries picked up a set in the third as the two teams battled back in forth with neither team grabbing more than a two point edge. Cayla Wood served up an ace followed by a Cobra error gave the Valkyries the momentum.
Converse had a chance to push it to a decisive fifth set against Coker but couldn't fend off the Cobra's attack. Converse led 23-17 late in the fourth set before Coker found themselves tied at 24-all. A Valkyrie service error and a Coker kill handed the set and match to the Cobras.
The first set started off fast for the Valkyries as they jumped out to a 8-1 advantage. Coker fought their way back scoring the next nine points to take a 10-8 lead and never surrendered the lead in the set. Converse had 10 kills in the set but also posted 10 attacking errors.
Coker would pull away in the second set after the Valkyries tied things at 8-all.
Converse posted double-digit kills in three of the four sets but was squandered by 14 service errors and 13 Coker service aces.
Both teams had the blocking game going with Coker posting 10 total blocks and Converse rejecting eight. Wheeler, Wood, and English posted a solo block each.
Converse returns to Conference Carolinas play as the Valkyries head up the road to face Limestone on Saturday, October 10.
Milestone Watch:
Katie Butler needs 62 more kills to achieve the 1000 kills plateu. Butler would be the second Valkyrie to reach 1000 kills in a career.
