SPARTANBURG, SC-- The Valkyries fell to the Limestone College Lady Saints 55-71 in Conference Carolinas women's basketball action on Thursday evening in Hannah Gym. The loss sends the Valkyries to 4-17 on the season (4-12 conference).
Limestone's Ashley Robinson kicked things off by grabbing the first field goal of the game and added a free throw. Converse's Ashley Day answered by sinking a quick lay-up. Ashley Arff followed with an immediate basket from the three point range that sent Converse on a 9-0 run. The Lady Saints battled back and another Robinson field goal evened the score at 12-12. Eventually, Limestone broke away from traded shots and went up by 7 points as the clock dwindled in the period. The Valkyries began a late comeback that left a four-point gap at the break in favor of Limestone 20-24.
In the second half, Limestone spent the first 10 minutes creating a 14 point deficit for Converse which came at the 25-39 mark. The Valkyries only managed to close the gap to 11 points with less than a minute to go; but, the Saints grabbed a few more shots at the charity stripe thanks to Converse fouls and ended the game 55-71.
The Valkyries were led by senior Ashley Arff who scored a game high 25 points. Sophomore Ashley Day added 10 more points and just missed a double-double, pulling down eight rebounds.
Lauren Pace led Limestone, scoring 17 points. Whitney Todd added 13 and Maria Young contributed 11 more.
Converse plays at home this Saturday, February 13 against conference foe Queens University of Charlotte at 2pm.
