SPARTANBURG, SC- The Pirates of Armstrong Atlantic State University bested the Valkyries, 56-47 Friday, Nov. 11th at the Tom and Tracy Hannah Gymnasium.
In the first half Armstrong Atlantic State dominated play shooting 43 percent from the field to Converse's 15 percent. The Pirates would take a 32-16 lead into the half.
In the second half, the Valkyries rallied behind the strong play of sophomore forward Katy Vaughan (Lebanon, TN) who helped Converse make a strong comeback to draw within 3 points with 2 minutes remaining. The Pirates rallied late to hold off the comeback effort, and secure the win with a final of 56-47.
Vaughan had a game-high 19 points (4-12 FG/ 10-10 FT) for the Valkyries, and was helped by the solid play of freshman forward Tasia Holdorf (Atlanta, GA) who added 8 points and 3 steals.
For Armstrong Atlantic State the duo of sophomore guard Jazmin Walker and freshman forward Mauri Wells dominated the boards and scoring. Walker who shot 7-11 from the field, posted a team leading 17 points with 7 rebounds and 4 assists. Wells added a double-double, shooting 5-7 from the field with 15 points and 10 rebounds.
Converse will be in action next, when they face Newberry College at home on Tuesday, Nov. 16th at home.
