Wilson, NC-- Three Valkyries players scored double digits Thursday night against Barton College. The Lady Bulldogs defeated Converse for an eighth straight victory, sending the Valkyries to 3-8 in Conference Carolinas play while Barton advances to 11-1.
The Valkyries fell behind in the first half after a 14-4 opening run by the Lady Bulldogs and never recovered, ending the period trailing 48-27. However, the second half saw a much more determined Converse squad that outscored Barton by seven points. The battle to recover proved to not be enough as the final buzzer sounded with a 14 point Converse deficit still on the board.
Ashley Arff led the Valkyries, scoring 19 points, hitting a third of her attempts from the arc (4 of 12). Alaina Smith followed with 16 points, canning eight of 10 shots from the charity stripe. Senior Jessica McMahan contributed 14 more points.
Converse scored 27 points from the arc compared to Barton's 12. The Valkyries also managed to edge out the Lady Bulldogs in free throws averaging 73% to Barton's 56%.
The Valkyies play at home on Saturday, January 30th against Anderson University at 2pm.
