SPARTANBURG, SC-- Conference Carolinas foe Mount Olive College cracked the Valkyries two-game win streak Monday evening 73-59. With the loss, Converse falls to 3-8 in conference play.
The game opened with point-for-point exchanges until a Laporsha Davis field goal sent the Trojans on a 10-0. Despite two lead changes in the first period, Converse dropped to a seven-point deficit at the halftime buzzer, 20-27.
In the second half, Katie Vaughn and Morgan Sacharski helped cut the deficit to just one point and the Valkyries eventually tied Mount Olive with just over 14 minutes left to play. A free throw by Sacharski established the only Valkyries lead for the second half. Later in the period, several players on both sides fouled out and Converse fell behind. Through several fouls in the last minute, the buzzer eventually sounded in favor of the Trojans, 73-59.
"Our ladies played with a lot of heart tonight. They never gave up and as soon as we learn to pair that kind of effort with flawless execution we will be a force in the conference," said Valkyries head coach Joanna Tincher.
Converse managed 0.73 points-per-possession while Mount Olive had 0.95. Both teams tied from the arc at 15-15. Converse edged out Mount Olive at the charity stripe 20-14 while Mount Olive converted 33 Valkyries turnovers for 33 points.
Helen Moore led Mount Olive with 23 total points. Laporsha Davis added 14 more for the Trojans. Mount Olive also managed to steal the ball 13 times.
Converse was led by senior Ashley Arff with 19 points. Sophomore Alaina Smith added 14 points and had seven rebounds. Morgan Sacharski also managed to pull down seven rebounds.
The Valkyries take the floor again when they visit Barton College in Wilson, NC on January 28th.
