Due West, SC-- The Converse College basketball team visited Conference Carolinas foe Erskine College on Monday evening, falling in a 12-point deficit after a great second half effort to deplete the Flying Fleet's first half advantage. The game ended 75-63 with Erskine on top, sending the Flying Fleet to 6-6 on the season while Converse falls to 1-12.
During the first period, Erskine created a comfortable lead, outscoring Converse from the three point land, the paint, and the charity stripe. However, when the second half opened, the Valkyries suffered a quick 8-1 run by the Flying Fleet and then began to outpace the EC competition, cutting the lead (50-30) to just a seven point advantage with a little over three minutes left in the bout. Converse outscored Erskine in the second half 35-33, but the effort was not enough as the buzzer sounded with a 12 point gap remaining for the Valkyries.
Senior Ashley Arff, who is now adding to a 1000+ point career, posted a double-double for the night with 24 points and 13 rebounds. Sophomore Alaina Smith followed, adding 10 points of her own and gathering 6 rebounds.
Converse plays at home on Thursday evening (Jan. 21st) at 6:00pm against conference foe Coker College.
