Spartanburg, SC -- The Converse College Valkyries hosted the Limestone College Saints in the last homestand game of the season. The game was an explosive bout of determination for both teams, which ended with the Saints in the lead, 85-79.
Converse College falls to 5-20 overall and 5-15 in Conference Carolinas, while Limestone College improves to 13-12 overall and 11-9 in conference. The Valkyries were led by Ashley Arff who dominated the first half with 5 consecutive 3-pointers and ended the game with 25 total points and 5 rebounds. Morgan Sacharski followed with a double-double: 11 points and 10 rebounds. Kendra Bothof had 12 total points and 5 rebounds.
Tierney Burdett held Limestone's game-high with 31 total points and Lauren Pace scored 20 total points.
The game began as a battle with both teams returning shot for shot. The Valkyries struggled to maintain the speed of the Saints, and Limestone crescendoed to a 13 point lead at 11:18. This zenith was abruptly ended by Sydney Brown at 11:13 and Ashley Arff began her wave of 3-pointers to bring the Valkyries to a narrow lead 42-40 at the half.
The second period was littered with fouls as both teams became frustrated with narrow point leads. The score was tied four times during this period, but the Saints took control at 5:11 with a gradually gained a point lead on the Valkyries. The Valkyries labor began to pay off as they struggled to closen their deficit to 4 points with 25 seconds remaining. In the ensuing seconds, however, Converse was not able to close the gap.
Although Limestone College led in percentage of goals (43.3% to 40.9%), Converse bested the Saints in total rebounds (53.2% to 46.8%) and points in the paint (34 to 28).
