SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Sophomore attack Sharlize Burgos scored four times, but it was not enough as the Converse lacrosse team dropped an 8-7 decision to Mars Hill University on Tuesday afternoon at Hayden Abney Fulp Field. The Valkyries dropped to 1-2 on the season, while MHU improved to 2-1.
Burgos started the scoring for Converse with an unassisted goal three minutes into the contest before Molly Tobias' equalizer in the seventh minute knotted the game at 1-1. Burgos put the Valkyries back on top with 20:58 remaining in the opening half. However, Maria Fabrizio scored back-to-back goals for the Lions to give Mars Hill its first lead.
Burgos and Krygier came right back for the Vals with two unanswered scores to reclaim the lead for the Purple and Gold. Tobias scored the tying goal for Mars Hill before Krygier tallied her second score with 14 seconds remaining to send Converse into the locker room leading 5-4.
Tyra Murray got in the scoring category 1:43 into the second half with to give the Valkyries their biggest lead at 6-4. However, Fabrizio was at it again for Mars Hill, finding the back of the net three consecutive times to put the visitors back in front 7-6 with just over nine minutes to go in regulation. Burgos connected on her fourth and final goal in the 55th minute, but Tobias captured the game winner a little over two minutes later to stun the home crowd.
Converse will be back in action on Saturday, March 9 as it opens Conference Carolinas play, hosting the Bobcats of Lees-McRae. First draw control is scheduled for 4 p.m.
