HOW IT HAPPENED
The Valkyries came out firing on all cylinders, taking a 6-2 lead following a Nigeria Davis (Newberry, S.C.) three-pointer. Six in a row by EC gave the Lions their first lead at 8-6, but Hill answered the run with a deep three, followed by a Davis layup. However, Emmanuel used a 7-0 run to push ahead 15-11, but Converse finished the final 3:26 of the quarter on a 7-2 spurt of its own to lead 18-17 after one.
Hill knocked down another triple to begin the second, sparking nine straight from the Purple and Gold, giving Converse its biggest lead (27-17) with 5:47 left to play in the first half. After the two teams traded a set of baskets, Emmanuel scored the final three points of the half to close within 34-28 heading into the locker room.
Emmanuel used a pivotal 15-5 run to open the second half, taking a 43-39 lead deep into the third quarter. A pair of free throws from Brooks cut the deficit to 43-41, but a three-pointer and jumper by the Lions allowed Emmanuel to take a 48-45 lead into the fourth period.
The fourth quarter belonged to the Lions as they outscored Converse 26-14 over the 10-minute span, pushing the lead up to as many as 17 (72-55) en route to the 74-59 victory.
